《1917》有兩段很美的詩句，烘托主角的現實困窘與心境感受。先講第一段。
’Down to Gehenna, or up to the Throne, He travels the fastest who travels alone.'
第一段是在 Schofield 和 Blake 出發前，疑惑地請問 Erinmore 將軍（Colin Firth 飾演），為何要只派他們兩人呢？將軍給他們的忠告是：’Down to Gehenna, or up to the Throne, He travels the fastest who travels alone.' 這是節錄自英國詩人 Rudyard Kipling（1865-1936）在 "The Winners" 的詩句。
原本在 Kipling 的詩中，將軍引用的是這一段的下面兩行：
When the night is thick and the tracks are blind
A friend at a pinch is a friend, indeed,
But a fool to wait for the laggard behind.
Down to Gehenna or up to the Throne,
He travels the fastest who travels alone.
簡單翻譯後的意思是：夜晚如此黑暗，路徑如此難辨，此時，在緊急剎那能相互助益的朋友，才是真朋友，但是那些拖拉牽連的笨朋友，實在可免。無論是下至煉獄或是登高王權，那些走得最快的人，都是獨自行動。

有沒有發現，這段詩文的情境，與兩個步兵在電影中遇到的情況相似。前往第二營要經過許多危險境地，路徑難辨、危機四伏，宛若行走黑暗中。但是，與其與一堆只會拖延礙事的蠢朋友怠慢緩行，像是 Schofield 在農舍的飛機失事之後，遇到由 Smith 將軍（Mark Stron 飾演）所帶領的軍車車隊；不如輕騎簡從，與摯友疾行，也就是 Schoflield 與 Blake 的結伴互助。
甚且，直到夜晚，在黑暗中，身上的佩槍子彈早已不見，最後連罐頭牛奶也都送人了，真的就只剩「他」一人風馳獨行。
Kipling 是 1907 年的諾貝爾文學獎得主，在一次大戰年間，是英國最火熱的文學家，也是大眾人物，如此就能明白，為何 Erinmore 將軍會在 1917 年引用他的詩句。Kipling 的作品也曾改編過電影——《與森林共舞》（2016）——相信許多人都已經看過，這電影是改編自他在 1894 年出版的青少年小說 The Jungle Book。
